Mount Saint Helens ~ Into the Crater
In 1989 and 1990 I had the good fortune of being able to hike into the Mount Saint Helens crater, something that the public is not allowed to do. I was the guest of a geologist friend, John Pitlick (pictured above) who was working for the Volcano Observatory at the time. It was quite an adventure! As close to being on the Moon as I'll ever get...
National Oldtime Fiddler's Festival ~ 1973-89
I have been attending the National Oldtime Fiddler's Festival in Weiser, Idaho since 1972. This fetival is based around a fiddle contest, but much of the action is in the campgrounds where an eclectic range of acoustic music is performed. This is the first volume of photos. Pictured above is legendary Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson.

Ontario Wilderness Cabin
In 1953 my father purchased a "fishing shack" on Trout Lake, in the Canadian wilderness north of Sault Ste, Marie, Ontario. After his passing in the 1990s we started going there on a regular basis, and remodeled the cabin as well. It's remote. There's no electricity, running water, phone service -- in deed, no commercial amenities. Wonderful!
Bella Coola, British Columbia ~ 1980s
In 1980 I moved to this remote community at the behest of my then wife. I got a job with the Ministry of Forests superivising "Handloggers" -- small business, independent loggers who selectively cut timber. To do this, I made regular trips on a Forest Service boat through the beautiful labyrinth of Fjord inlets in Central British Columbia (see "British Columbia Central Coast 1980s"). The marriage dissolved and I moved back to the U.S., but it was quite an adventure while it lasted.

MerleFest 1993 & 1995
MerleFest is a large Bluegrass and Americana music festival in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. It was the impetus of legendary acoustic guitarist Doc Watson, and named after his deceased son, Merle. It is 4 days of marvelous performances from some of the best acoustic musicians in the world. I was there twice in the 1990s, and was fortunate to have a backstage pass for these images. Enjoy!

Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys ~ 1980s
Darrington: Bluegrass Capital of the Northwest
Sometime in the first half of the 20th Century a large number of people from the Sylva, North Carolina area moved out to Darrington, Washington. They did this because of plentiful jobs working in the local timber industry. They brought with them the music they grew up with around Sylva. In time this morphed into Bluegrass jams, and then, in 1977, a full-blown Bluegrass festival, in addition to many local concerts with traveling Bluegrass musicians. I attended my first festival there in the early 1980s, and then subsequently performed with my own Bluegrass bands, including the Friends of Sally Johnson, and The Fossils. As well, I took photographs. Here they are!
Backstage at the Grand 'Ole 'Opry
In 2011 a friend and I went back to a music festival in Nashville. While we were there another friend, Ronnie McCoury of the Del McCoury Band contacted me and got us a backstage pass at the 'Opry! Yes sir! It was quite a lot of fun hob-knobbing with some of our musical heroes while watching the machinations of how an evening's program at one of the world's most celebrated musical venues unfolded. Here are some images (that's me with the Del McCoury band in the photo).
Dave Jack of Saturna Island
In 1988 I went sailing in Canada's Gulf Islands with my friends, Phil & Vivian Williams. At one point we tied up at the dock of Dave & Flo Jack on Saturna Island. These two were "characters" of the first order. Dave was a master boat builder and steam engine buidler. While we weren't out plying the waters in one of his own handmade craft, one-eyed Dave (from an injury he received in his youth) regaled us with humorous stories of his many adventures, Flo chipping in with her own commentary. They were quite a pair...(if you are interested in learning more about Dave & Flo Jack, please go to this link:) https://1drv.ms/w/s!AiYIpy5kKTdPqzA18fspUuEgsCIp?e=rMk5aF
