And all at once I understood how lucky I was.
For the first time I saw quite clearly that what mattered in the walk were the simple things:
Snow and vivid light and sharp-grained bobcat tracks.
And when at last I walked on past the two juniper trees toward the far side of the plateau
I found I was feeling sorry for any man who was not free to abandon whatever futility detained him
And to walk away into the desert morning with a pack on his back.

I have lived a rich and varied life with numerous adventures of which I am proud of and happy to have done. Some of this is documented in articles and photos either at, or linked to, this website. Thank you for your interest.
My wife and I live in Anacortes, Washington. I am retired while she and her mom own Gae's Drapery, a window treatments business. We are both musicians and have fronted bluegrass bands, though mostly inactive now (please see Music link for details). I am a photographer with some awards. Examples of my images can be found in the Photo Gallery.
I was born in London, Ontario, Canada with dual citizenship from my father who was American. My Canadian-born mom was Supervising Nurse for Allegan County Health Department in Michigan, and my father worked for Standard Oil. Both are deceased. I grew up in Wayland, Michigan.
I have a Broadcast Journalism degree from Michigan State University and M.A. in Information Science from the University of Washington. I have free-lanced a number of Articles for various publications including Bluegrass Unlimited magazine; Raincoast Chronicles magazine; Canada West magazine; the Seattle Weekly; as well as writing liner notes for CDs. I worked as a Librarian for Washington state Community Colleges and at Western Washington University. I am a Vietnam vet, where I worked as a broadcaster for AFVN, and as a journalist for the 1st Logistical Command.
I also did M.A. work at Humboldt State University in Environmental Sciences and worked seasonally for the National Park Service at Grand Teton NP; Redwood NP; and North Cascades NP. I have also worked seasonally as a Wilderness Ranger in California's Trinity Alps and Olympic National Forest, as well as a Forester for the Ministry of Forests in Bella Coola, B.C.
