I am selling my 1986 Stan Miller F-5 Model mandolin. I purchased this Maple/Spruce mandolin new and am selling because I am buying another instrument and cannot afford to keep it. Stan Miller is a meticulous craftsman whose "star is rising" according to Stu Herrick of the Folkstore in Seattle. This particular instrument was either #26 or #27 in Stan's list. Other musicians who own Millers include Butch Waller, Jody Stecher, and Tom Bekeny.
It is a loud, woody instrument that is perfect for bluegrass playing or oldtime music. It has an oil/french polish finish, with a few wear marks from playing ("character," Stan calls it). The neck has no truss rod but an inlaid piece of ebony for strength. Still fine after 25 years -- buy it for its 25th birthday, Aug. 1! The original frets are good with some wear on the "A" and "E" strings up to the 5th or 6th fret. It plays fine. The instrument has a silver plated Bill James tailpiece.
If you are looking for an instrument that will compare favorably with top makers, at a much reduced price, you have found it!
New Price: $5250.00 w/ hardshell case and case cover. For questions please send me an email at: barry@barrybrower.org
